 We've Only Just Begun

We were in our early twenties in 1983, when we married on the first day of Spring, at 3:00, in a little upstate New York church. I remember it all. I was a princess. He was my prince. We even sang together at our reception. Our honeymoon was perfect.

But when the honeymoon was over, the fighting began. We were like most every other couple we knew. We loved like crazy. We fought like crazy. And then we would make up. But things have changed. We are old people now, seniors, over-the-hill, next in line to go. No, really, I figure if I say it enough and, in enough ways, I will get used to it. Seriously.

We did a fine job raising kids. But when they were grown, letting go came in stages for me. Once I did fully let go, it was like a door opened, and it was a beautiful sunny day outside. My husband was out there waiting for me. It was just the two of us again.

He still gets up, goes to work every day, and comes home to me and a clean home, etc. He likes to pitter, garden, and watch TV. I like my hobbies, music, and many cookbooks. We exercise. We have dinner and play backgammon. Yes. For real. We play that game. Then we go on the couch and watch an old sitcom with our dog, Coti sitting in-between us.

Days off, we can now do more, as our bills are paid off and we have more freed up money. We are embracing this latest chapter in our lives together, especially being grandparents.
Currently we are planning for the retirement years and figuring out where we want to build that house I have been designing for decades. In so many ways, we've only just begun.

The LORD is the strength of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
